In 2019, China’s tech workers gave the schedule a name, and a GitHub repo gave it a diagnosis: 996.ICU. Work 996, end up in the ICU. A billionaire called it a blessing.

tǎng píng — to lie flat

In April 2021, Luo Huazhong, a former factory worker, posted a short essay on Baidu Tieba: 躺平即是正义, Lying Flat Is Justice.

He had quit his job in 2016, cycled about 2,100 km from Sichuan to Tibet, and was living on roughly $60 a month. No house, no car, no promotion ladder. He compared himself to Diogenes.

The post was deleted. The phrase was restricted. By the end of the year it was one of the ten biggest memes on the Chinese internet anyway.

Lying flat isn’t giving up on life. It’s giving up on the race.
